LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENT SERIES: MAXIMIZE SMALLER SPACES

LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENT SERIES: MAXIMIZING SMALLER SPACES

June is the month where spring transitions to summer; we've all been looking forward to this warmer weather, summer nights, and more time outdoors. Continuing on with our landscape improvement series, we are showcasing maximizing smaller spaces. Even smaller areas can be maximized to offer incredible functionality when designed properly. Keep reading to see how we maximized these spaces for optimal enjoyment.

ANDOVER’S DOWNTOWN AREA

These properties may have smaller lots and less frontage than other homes in town, however this quintessential downtown Andover home allowed us to create an inviting entry that flows beautifully from the street. From the sidewalk, bluestone was used to create a landing leading to three steps followed by a walkway. Two tall, matching planters used for seasonal plantings and spreading liriope surround the sides of the steps leading to plush lawn. The lawn is met with beautiful, tailored gardens that include boxwood, holly, and blooming hydrangea lining an incredibly restored wrap-around porch. All visitors experience all of this in the time it takes to walk a short distance from the street to the vibrant yellow door; talk about warm welcome!

SOUTHEND ROOFTOP

As challenging as small spaces can be, we find that they always turn out incredible when no detail is spared. We transformed this open-space rooftop to a contemporary oasis in Boston's South End. Using dark composite decking, weathered lead planters, contemporary patio furniture, and lush greenery to offer privacy, this once blank canvas is now an inviting space for relaxing and taking in the city skyline.

COUNTRY CLUB LANE

We transformed this backyard into a true sanctuary fully equipped with an in-ground pool, hot tub, and fire pit. However, the size and shape of the area this property presented was not your typical size to welcome these client requests. The large home combined with rear yard setback as well as conservation setbacks created a small envelope for development. Still, we delivered and designed this space that will provide years of outdoor enjoyment.

LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENT SERIES: TRANSITIONAL DESIGN

We're continuing into April with our Landscape Improvement Series. We'll be sharing various projects from our portfolio with you of different styles and aesthetics.

You can probably infer that transitional design is when you marry two opposite styles. We like to think of it like a fresh take on a classic design with some updates that are more contemporary. Transitional design honors the history of a house, but adds in a fresh twist bringing a home's aesthetic up-to-date with clean lines and simplistic design.

Below are some photographs of a custom, gunite swimming pool and surrounding landscape that would be considered transitional style. The site presented a number of challenges including conservation setback requirements and zoning setbacks -- which were overcome by creative design and shoehorning a beautiful pool into a tight site.

Granite pavers surround the pool and create a flat landing for a moveable fire bowl. South-facing chaise lounges sit on a granite terrace with lawn joints. Full-length pool steps create a very inviting entrance from the chaise terrace. The existing deck stairs were re-routed in order to create adequate walking room around the pool while the new stairs create a nice flow from the upper deck to the lower pool garden.

A privacy-board fence runs along the side boundaries while a lower cedar fence with wire mesh runs adjacent to the rear yard's wood lands. This mesh fence creates a feeling of transparency and openness all while meeting pool enclosure code requirements.

A blend of traditional details and materials are combined with a clean, contemporary layout to create a private backyard paradise.

LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENT SERIES: CONTEMPORARY FRONT ENTRANCES

Introducing our Landscape Improvement Series: Contemporary Front Entrances

Over the next few months we'll be sharing various projects from our portfolio with you of different styles and aesthetics.

This month we are featuring two inviting walkways leading up to the front entrances of contemporary homes.

To create an inviting walkway -- and often times a staircase leading to a home's front door --  we create a design that complements and considers the home's architectural style and neighborhood vernacular while also providing a safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing welcome to the home.

Take a look at these two contemporary style homes with complimentary entrances.

RESERVATION ROAD

A varying-length staircase breaks up this tall, front facade and seamlessly fits into the topography of the site. A layered, linear planting at the foundation further accentuates the clean, horizontal lines. See more of this project under Reservation Road on our website.

Russell and John are an excellent team! Russell’s designs are elegant and modern. Our challenging, sloped lot needed a front walkway that would complement the house. We love the design that Russell developed, and he and John worked with us to scale it to our budget. John and his crew were easy to work with when it came time for installation. The work is top-quality, we’re happy with the end result, and the compliments keep rolling in.

FISH BROOK

This unique, front entry comprised of local granite borders a loose aggregate walkway. The granite inserts create a fun, rhythmic, and graphic element leading up to the statement stairs. The exfoliating bark of the river birch trees complements the cedar siding of the home creating a cohesive feel. See more of this project under Fish Brook Overlook on our website.

We have worked with other contractors on past projects and appreciate John’s attention to detail, work ethic, and craftsmanship to a degree we haven’t previously experienced. He makes suggestions to enhance our project and also solutions when issues arise. He is up-front with costs and keeps us updated as the project progresses. The final result is beautiful.
